Mar 06 Ubuntu: I am because we are
Moving from self to us.
I begin my first blog by sharing the philosophy of “Ubuntu.”
Ubuntu is a Zulu word that translates to “I am because we are.” The philosophy behind ubuntu is that it “Embodies all those virtues that maintain harmony and the spirit of sharing among the members of society” according to New World Encyclopedia.
Why choose ubuntu as my first topic?
Because more than ever ubuntu is a powerful reminder by which to live and lead by. Ubuntu is about human interdependence so that together we can thrive and succeed. Human beings were not created to exist in isolation. Yet today, we can simply turn to the media to witness the fear and division that is permeating our world, our work environments, our communities, and even our homes.
Call me optimistic, call me naïve, but I believe in the human spirit.
Brené Brown based on her research shares that connection is why we’re here. In her own words, she says that “We are hardwired to connect with others, it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and without it there is suffering.” She also says that vulnerability is the most courageous thing we do on a daily basis. I believe this to be true. I also believe that when we do our work, much is possible. I believe in our ability to change what is not working so that we can succeed and thrive together. I believe that being open to new perspectives, empathy, and what I call courageous-vulnerability, can make a difference in our ability to have meaningful conversations, engage, find solutions, and achieve results.
It takes courage to live ubuntu…to move from self to us.
Connection is possible with one another if we allow ourselves to truly be seen. The challenge is that being seen requires us to put down our armor. Putting down our armor requires us to be brave aka vulnerable. And so therein lies the rub…. Living a deliberate and courageous life is not for the faint of heart. How brave do you wish to be?
Live & Lead Deliberately.
Wholeheartedly,
Janet
